The Austinot Weekend Concert Picks: Sept. 21-23, 2018

Austinot Weekend Concert Picks Sept 21

Welcome to the weekend, glorious readers! The space of time between Friday evening and Monday morning should be reserved for friends, family, and copious amounts of local live music. To fill this void, we recommend heartfelt country, blistering hard rock, and an annual festival worth braving downtown. Enjoy the weekend and–as always–listen local!

Parker McCollum w/Jonathan Terrell

@ Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater (801 Red River) – 7 p.m. – Tickets

With smooth country vocals and songwriting chops that extend beyond his years, Parker McCollum brings humility and heart to a well-worn sound. Tunes like "Hell of a Year" tell a tale of tumultuous love gone wrong, while during "Misunderstood," McCollum admits and embraces his faults at the same time. Fine, authentic country written for those who like introspection tossed in with the twang.

Also playing is Austin's steoreotype-defying singer/songwriter, Jonathan Terrell.

Megafauna Band Austin

Megafauna w/Rotten Mangos, Lindsey Mackin (of Annabelle Chairlegs), more

Hotel Vegas (1502 E. 6th St.) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event

Blistering melodic metal that must be seen live to appreciate, Megafauna is a shining star in the ATX music stratosphere. "Desire" blends Dani Neff's guitar goddess wizardry with a time-signature-shifting stomp reminiscent of Tool, while "This Town" screams across the sheet music with technical prowess and sheer force of will. A smashing blend of musicianship, melody, and pure rock and roll power.

Also playing are experimental trip-pop act Rotten Mangos, vocalist Lindsey Mackin (of Annabelle Chairlegs), and others.

Sunday, Sept. 23

Nakia SXSW 2018 Black Fret

Pecan Street Festival

Sixth Street between Brazos and I-35 – 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. – Music lineup

Austin's celebration of neighborhood good times, Pecan Street Festival is a biannual highlight. To go with all the fried food, vendors, and general frivolity, the weekend boasts an impressive lineup of Austin's finest musical talent. The Sunday lineup include local favorites like pop princess Kady Rain, the soulful sounds of Nakia and the Blues Grifters, alt-indie darlings Belcurve, and the soulful funk of Yuma. For the entire lineup, visit the link above. Did I mention the festival is free?
