Austinot Weekend Concert Picks August 17

Warning! Kids are going back to school! It's time once again for band practice, gymnastic lessons, and carting little ones from home to school and back again. My remedy for classroom chaos? Live music! This weekend, I recommend a legendary psychedelic rocker, a music benefit at the Moody, and female-fronted hard rock destined for ATX greatness. Listen local, y'all!

@ Barracuda (611 E. 7th) – 9 p.m. – Tickets

Many credit Roky Erickson with being the father of modern psychedelic rock. One glance at his impressive discography and you'll probably agree. With landmark songs like 1966 You're Gonna Miss Me" to modern classics like the aggressive "Two Headed Dog," Erickson has been honing his craft for over five decades.

He was one of my SXSW 2018 highlights. If you've never seen him live, then make a point of doing so this weekend.

Also playing are rock and roll group The Reputations and punk rockers The Flesh Lights.

Bob Schneider Performing

Bob Schneider

Austin Originals Benefit feat. Bob Schneider w/Casey McPherson, Nakia, James Junius

@ ACL Live at the Moody Theater (310 W. Willie Nelson Blvd.) – 9 p.m. – Tickets

When you think of Austin music, luminaries like Stevie Ray, Willie, and Dale Watson should immediately spring to mind. As a multi-decade veteran of the local scene, Bob Schneider should also be on that list. Saturday, Schneider performs at a concert extravaganza in support of Austin Child Guidance Center, an organization dedicated to supporting children's mental health.

This year's event is star studded. Not only will Schneider perform his trademark pop/rock sound, but Casey McPherson of Alpha Rev will perform a new composition and Nakia will bring his soulful funk to the party. Add to the mix bites from local eateries, and you have an evening to remember.

Lola Tried w/ Marmalakes

@ ABGB (1305 W. Oltorf) – 9 p.m. – Event page

My first experience with Lola Tried was in the backyard of the now defunct Gingerman, during last year's SXSW. It was a 1 p.m. set on a steamy Friday, and this rock and roll foursome blew me away. Blustery rock with a flair for earworm hooks and shredding guitar, Lola Tried is perfect playlist fodder for those fond of A Giant Dog, Emily Bell, and other ATX headbangers. Oh, and their self titled debut record is a thing of thrashing beauty.

Also playing: folk rockers Marmalakes.
